SharePoint 2010

SharePoint 2010 introduces a large number of beneficial changes to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS).

What’s New?

Firstly the user interface is greatly improved thanks to the new “Ribbon” interface which streamlines content management making the system quicker and easier to use.

FAST Search provides quicker and more accurate results, with improved Meta Data tagging for more contextual information and better search filtering.

Back-up and restore options are more extensive and easier to use with a far simpler Central Administration section.

Users can also take advantage of Knowledge Networking tools which aid collaborative working and communication.

Users can now work offline using SharePoint Workspace 2010.

Mobile working has been enhanced allowing standard mobile views but also with the ability to edit data.

The Analytics Reports are much more comprehensive providing better usage as well as performance information.

The new Business Connectivity Service (BCS) enables SharePoint to read from and write back to other lines of business systems.

Business Intelligence tools have been greatly enhanced with more features for reporting, charting and KPIs.

PLUS enjoy Cheaper License Costs with the new Standard License for Internet Sites costing around £1,000 for academic licensing customers.

What are the requirements?

SharePoint 2010 is 64 bit only, requiring 64 bit infrastructure and software.

Can I upgrade?

Microsoft have provided a number of tools to make the upgrade to SharePoint 2010 as easy as possible. This includes the ability to do visual upgrades to slowly introduce the changes to users.
